Divine is an Indian rapper and lyricist who first came into the spotlight with the release of the 2013 song Yeh Mera Bombay which won the ‘Best Video of the Year’ award from Rolling Stone India magazine. His breakthrough came in 2015 when he collaborated with fellow Mumbai rapper Naezy on the song Mere Gully Mein. It eventually led to the conception of the 2019 film Gully Boy which was inspired by the 2 rappers’ lives. Both Divine and Naezy not only contributed to the soundtrack of the film but also pitched in as consultants to help the film’s creative team capture the true essence of Mumbai’s slums and its underground hip-hop culture. Divine has contributed as a singer and lyricist for other Bollywood films such as Mukkabaaz (2017) and Blackmail (2018) and has helped with the soundtrack of the Emmy-nominated Netflix web series Sacred Games. His first studio album titled Kohinoor was released in 2019. In February 2019, he launched a record label called Gully Gang Entertainment that aimed to identify and support young hip-hop talent in Mumbai.

Divine Facts

  • He discovered about hip-hop and rap music after watching a friend in school who wore a shirt that depicted imagery from American rapper 50 Cent‘s debut album Get Rich Or Die Tryin’. The same friend also gifted him an MP3 CD that contained an assortment of hip hop music which inspired him to rap in English.
  • Divine eventually started his journey as an underground rapper in 2011. He was a member of a crew named Mumbai’s Finest that rapped about their personal experiences and life in Mumbai’s poor slums.
  • He selected Divine as his stage name because he had started by writing gospel songs. Interestingly, ‘Gully’ (Alley/Street) was the first word that he wrote down after selecting Divine as his moniker.
  • He was featured in the Charlie Sloth Show on the BBC Asian Network in 2016 and was the first Hindi-speaking rapper to freestyle on the show.
  • In July 2019, a documentary film titled Gully Life – The story of DIVINE was released and aired first on the Discovery Channel. It later found its way on his primary YouTube channel as well.
  • He was named ‘Musician of the Year’ at the 2018 Outlook Social Media Awards. In 2020, he won a Filmfare for the song Apna Time Aayega from the movie Gully Boy (2019) in the ‘Best Lyrics’ category.
  • In May 2023, Divine got to perform during the mid-innings break in IPL 2023 final match between Gujarat Titans (GT) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in which CSK was the winner. Jonita Gandhi had also performed apart from him.
