Don Trip Facts
He grew up in a fatherless household and his mother, despite working 3 jobs, used to struggle to support him, his brother, and his sister. When he was 12 years old, he began working to support his siblings.About 3 years later, as his family began experiencing even more financial duress, he began rapping and making music, inspired by the pre-teen hip-hop duo Kriss Kross. After honing his skills for years, he began releasing mixtapes and singles in the late 2000s which included 9 projects released between October 2010 (a mixtape titled Crossface Crippler) and February 2012 (a mixtape titled Guerilla). In the early stages of his career, he used to release his mixtapes on websites such as Datpiff (an online distribution platform that was launched in 2005, specializing in hip-hop, rap, and urban music) and HotNewHipHop. Don Trip soon earned a massive fan following as a street rapper. However, in 2011, it was a song titled Letter to My Son (originally released in 2009) which prompted his progress toward mainstream hip-hop. This was after the song had gone semi-viral on YouTube. The song had chronicled the struggle of an inability to see one’s family due to a court ruling. This eventually led to him signing up with the renowned record label Interscope Records in 2012.In 2012, he had also been included in American hip-hop magazine XXL‘s ‘Freshman Class’, an annual compilation of 10 artists to watch who are all featured on the cover of the magazine. Soon after this, he was signed up by Epidemic Records, a joint enterprise between the production duo Cool & Dre and Interscope Records.Although he was dropped from Interscope Records soon after, he continued to find success, as an independent artist, with his critically acclaimed series of mixtapes and albums titled Step Brothers, developed in collaboration with fellow Tennessee rapper Starlito. The first release in this series, a mixtape titled Step Brothers (2011), was peppered with references and in-jokes about the 2008 American comedy film titled Step Brothers and gained a cult following among the rap community.Featured Image by Don Trip / Instagram
