Every Hell In A Cell PPV Ranked, According To Cagematch.Net
The first-ever Hell in a Cell match took place in 1997 between Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker. Since then, we saw some great Hell in a Cell matches, and it quickly became one of the favorite stipulations of wrestling fans. In 2009, WWE decided to give Hell in a Cell its own PPV and since then we have seen it every year.
Over the years, WWE have been criticized a lot for having HIAC as a PPV as it makes things predictable and matches that shouldn't take place inside Hell in a Cell have to take place inside it due to the PPV which results in some poor matches. WWE has had its fair share of bad and good Hell in a Cell PPVs. With Hell in a Cell coming up this year, let's see how the users of Cagematch.net have ranked all Hell in a Cell PPVs.
13 2019 - 3.25
There's no surprise that the 2019 edition of Hell in a Cell is rated the lowest. The event was bound to be bad from the start as WWE had announced only 4 matches before the event and then the matches that took place on the show were quite average and belonged on weekly shows, not on PPV.
The show did have a fantastic opener in Sasha Banks versus Becky Lynch. It was a terrific Hell in a Cell match, however it was completely overshadowed by the horrendous main event. The main event was the infamous HIAC match between Seth Rollins and The Fiend. The outcome of the match pissed off the fans, and it's considered to be one of the worst wrestling matches ever.
12 2012 - 4.89
This show did have a few quality matches. Randy Orton versus Alberto Del Rio was pretty good. Also, the World Heavyweight Championship match between Sheamus and The Big Show has been praised a lot over the years, and it's also considered to be one of the best matches of both men's career.
However, the bad outweighed the good in this event as it ended on a very bad note. The main event HIAC match between CM Punk and Ryback was painfully average to watch, and it just never clicked. The Brad Maddox angle was also quite stupid and made things worse.
11 2009 - 4.98
The first-ever edition of Hell in a Cell. This one isn't as bad as the last two entries, but it was quite average overall. The show had three Hell in a Cell matches which felt a bit too much at the time. The match between CM Punk and The Undertaker was very short and shouldn't have been a Hell in a Cell match.
John Cena and Randy Orton also wrestled each other inside Hell in a Cell in a decent match but at that point, their feud had been going for far too long. The main event between D-Generation X and Legacy was good which meant the show ended on a good note. Overall, the show isn't that bad, but it could have been better.
10 2013 - 5.73
This show was mostly average with a couple of good matches here and there. The Hell in a Cell match which saw CM Punk taking on Ryback & Paul Heyman was awful and should never have been on the card. The match between John Cena and Alberto Del Rio was also quite boring.
The only good parts of the show were the beginning and the end. The show opened with a fantastic triple threat tag team match between the teams of Cody Rhodes & Goldust, The Usos and The Shield. The show closed with a good Hell in a Cell match between Randy Orton and Daniel Bryan for the WWE Championship.
9 2021 - 5.75
The most recent edition of Hell in a Cell. There were some cool matches on the card. Most of the matches on the show delivered except for the match between Alexa Bliss and Shayna Baszler and also the match between Charlotte Flair and Rhea Ripley was uninteresting too.
However, the main criticism of the show was the fact that there were way too many rematches. There were also many weird finishes in the show which hurt the overall quality. Plus, since this was the last PPV to take place inside the Thunderdome, fans expected a lot more from the show.
8 2014 - 6.26
This was a pretty good show overall as the rating suggests. The show opened with a solid 2-out-of-3 falls match between Dolph Ziggler and Cesaro for the Intercontinental Championship. John Cena and Randy Orton had another Hell in a Cell match which was also quite fun.
The main event was another match between Seth Rollins and Den Ambrose as part of their great feud. This time inside Hell in a Cell, the two delivered yet another fun and enjoyable match which improves the overall quality of the event.
7 2016 - 6.36
Hell in a Cell 2016 was quite historic as it featured the first-ever women's Hell in a Cell match between Sasha Banks and Charlotte. The two women gave it all in a very entertaining bout and showed everyone what they were capable of.
The PPV had two other Hell in a Cell matches. Roman Reigns defended his US Championship against Rusev in a solid opener. The match of the night was the match between Kevin Owens and Seth Rollins which also took place inside the cell. The three Hell in a Cell matches felt a bit too much for one show, but each of them delivered in their own way and made the show enjoyable.
6 2011 - 6.38
The 2011 edition of Hell in a Cell is often overlooked. The show didn't feature the best card, but it was pretty decent. The opening bout between Christian and Sheamus was fantastic and is a very underrated match. The tag team titles match between Air Boom and Dolph Ziggler & Jack Swagger was quite enjoyable too.
The event featured two Hell in a Cell matches. The first one was between Mark Henry and Randy Orton for the World Heavyweight Championship. It was a decent match and had some good action. The other HIAC match was the main event triple threat match for the WWE Championship between Alberto Del Rio, John Cena and CM Punk. This match is also quite forgotten over the years and people don't remember how good the contest was.
5 2017 - 6.51
The most memorable match from this show is easily the tag team Hell in a Cell match between The Usos and The New Day. The two tag teams always deliver when they fight each other, so they were bound to have a great match inside Hell in a Cell.
The show featured another great Hell in a Cell match between Shane McMahon and Kevin Owens. It had another stipulation added that it would be a "Falls Count Anywhere" match too. The match might have been a bit long, but it certainly didn't disappoint. The final bump from Shane McMahon is also very memorable.
4 2015 - 7.01
The 2015 edition of Hell in a Cell featured many quality bouts. To start off, Alberto Del Rio made a return to challenge John Cena for the US Championship in a huge shocker. Roman Reigns and Bray Wyatt also had a good Hell in a Cell match as part of their awesome feud. Nikki Bella and Charlotte also had a decent bout for the Divas belt.
The show-stealer was easily the Hell in a Cell match between The Undertaker and Brock Lesnar which was also the main event. The feud between them had been great and as expected, the HIAC match was amazing and often talked about as one of the best modern-day Hell in a Cell matches.
3 2018 - 7.04
This is another very overlooked PPV. Most of the matches of the show delivered. Randy Orton and Jeff Hardy had an insane match with many brutal spots. It is definitely one of the most brutal matches in recent years. The tag team titles match between the teams of Dean Ambrose & Seth Rollins and Drew McIntyre & Dolph Ziggler was also a very exciting fast-paced contest which took the quality of the show up a notch.
AJ Styles and Samoa Joe had yet another great match and many fans believe that match should have taken place inside the Hell in a Cell. The main event was disappointing as no one wants to see a non-finish in an HIAC match, but that doesn't take away from the rest of the card which was fantastic.
2 2020 - 7.07
This show had three Hell in a Cell matches and each of them delivered and were the best parts of the show. Roman Reigns and Jey Uso had a great family affair in an I Quit Hell in a Cell match. The in-ring action wasn't the best, but from storytelling point of view, the match was awesome. Sasha Banks and Bayley also had a fantastic match with Sasha winning the belt which was a great moment.
Finally, to close off the show we got Drew McIntyre defend his WWE Championship against Randy Orton. While it wasn't as good as the other two HIAC matches, it was still a very solid affair. Randy beat McIntyre to win his 14th world title. The rest of the show was filler, but the three Hell in a Cell matches were enough to make this show great.
1 2010 - 7.12
Totally opposite to the previous entry, the highlights of this show were the regular matches. The HIAC match between Kane and The Undertaker was the most disappointing match of the entire card. The other Hell in a Cell match, which was between Sheamus and Randy Orton was decent but not quite memorable.
Onto the good matches, Wade Barrett and John Cena had a pretty good bout and the fact that Barrett won was also good. The match of the night was a unique "submissions count anywhere" match between The Miz, Daniel Bryan and John Morrison. It was very impressive and had a lot of cool moments.
