Richard Benjamin Harrison Wiki Biography

Richard Benjamin Harrison Jr., better known as ‘’The Old Man’’, was born on 4 March 1941 in Danville, Virginia USA, into a family of Irish ancestry. He was a businessman and reality television star, best known for his appearance in ‘’Pawn Stars’’. ‘The Old Man’ passed away in June 2018.

So how rich was ‘The Old Man’ at the time of his passing? Sources report that Harrison’s net worth was over $8 million, accumulated from his over three decades long career as a pawn shop owner, and his over six years-long career as a reality television star. This could be an underestimate, as his business is known to make a profit of over $1 million a year, and his income from “Pawn Shop” was over $300,000 each season. His assets included a 1966 Imperial Crown – it took Harrison 15 years to convince the owner to sell his car to him. He maintained a passion for automobiles all his life.

Richard attended Lexington High School in Virginia, after which he became a member of the US military, a decision he made after he stole a car and was given two options: to go to jail or to join the military. He spent 20 years in the US Navy – actually re-enlisting to use medical benefits in respect of his daughter – serving on four ships, the final five years on fleet tug ATF 100 USS Chowanoc. After leaving the Navy, he worked in his wife’s real estate company, however, their business went bankrupt, leaving them with losses of over $1 million.

In 1981, with only $5,000 left, Richard and his wife moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where he opened the now ‘World Famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop’ with his son, Rick. The shop specializes in art, rare collectibles, and memorabilia. The shop and its staff were featured on ‘’Insomniac with Dave Attell’’, and after that it was offered participation in its own reality show, ‘’Pawn Stars’’, which debuted in 2009 on the History Channel. It is focused on Richard and his family – son Rick and grandson Corey – and their interaction with their numerous and often interesting customers, and what they have to sell, or in many cases what they want to buy. Richard subsequently appeared in 271 episodes, his last in the episode ‘’ Underground Pawn ‘’ in 2015. ‘’Pawn Stars’’ became the History Channel’s highest-rated program within the tenth week of debut, and partly as a consequence of the publicity, Richard’s shop was being visited by over 5,000 people on a daily basis, and opened 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with an extensive inventory of over 12,000 items.

In 2010, Richard was given the key to the city of Las Vegas by the Mayor. In the same year, he made an appearance in an episode of the reality TV show ‘’American Restoration’’. In addition to that, ‘’Pawn Stars’’ has received several awards – in 2011, the show won the ASCAP Award for Top Television Series, and continued on to receive the same award three years in a row. In 2012, it was nominated for Critics’ Choice TV Award in the category of Best Reality Series. As of the more recent past, ‘The Old Man’ Harrison appeared in one episode of ‘’Midway USA’s Gun Stories’’. Almost until his demise, he still went to the shop, although the audience didn’t get to see him after 2015. Reportedly, he was still the first to arrive at the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop every morning, following the night shift!

In his personal life, Richard was married to Joanne Rhue since 1960. They have three sons, and also had a daughter born with Down’s syndrome, who died when she was six years old. His absence from the show stirred rumors that he had died, and although those rumors turned out to be false at the time, in his later years he struggled with Parkinson’s disease, which was partly responsible for his demise.

‘The Old Man’ Harrison died on 25 June 2018, at his home in Las Vegas, at the age of 77, a much-respected member of society.
