Sanket Sargar is an Indian weightlifter who came into the spotlight in July 2022 when he clinched the ‘Silver’ medal in the 55 kg weight class at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. He lifted 113 kg in snatch and 135 kg in clean & jerk to achieve a total lift of 248 kg. In an attempt to lift 139 kg (which would have given him a total lift of 252 kg and as things later panned out, the ‘Gold’ medal by a lead of 3 kg) in the 2nd of his 3 clean & jerk attempts, he badly injured his right hand. Despite the failed attempt and an injured hand, he insisted that he would attempt the same lift in the 3rd and final of his clean & jerk attempts. Heroic as the attempt was, it was bound to fail and he would eventually attend the medal ceremony with his injured hand in a sling. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, a branch of the Government of India, immediately sanctioned an amount of INR 30 lakhs so that he could undergo surgery in the United Kingdom itself.

Sanket Sargar Facts

  • Born and raised in a locality where weightlifting was quite popular, Sanket took a liking to the sport at a very young age. He would often complete his school activities, help his father at the family’s tea stall in the evening, and then go to a local gym to practice weightlifting.
  • Due to the family’s financial constraints, his father would often borrow money so that Sanket could continue to pursue his passion. A lot of Sanket’s issues were taken care of, though, after he was included in the TOPS (Target Olympic Podium Scheme) program of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in the late 2010s.
  • He has also trained extensively at the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NIS), the academic wing of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and Asia’s largest sports institute, located in the city of Patiala in the northern Indian state of Punjab.
  • He qualified for the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games by setting up a national and Commonwealth record of 256 kg (113 kg in snatch and 143 kg in clean & jerk) in the 55 kg weight category at the Singapore Weightlifting International in February 2022.
  • When Sanket won the ‘Silver’ medal at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, his father took half a day off from running his tea stall to celebrate the achievement. This was the first time in years that he had done so as the family’s financial situation meant that there was no way he could afford to do so before his son made it big.
