    Song Yadong Facts

  • Yadong was raised by a single mother who realized his potential and enrolled him in a Sanda martial arts school when he was about 9 years old. Sanda is the official Chinese kickboxing full-contact combat sport. It was originally developed by the Chinese military based on the practices of traditional kung fu and modern combat fighting techniques.
  • In 2011, he won the Hebei Provincial Sanda Championship in the 60 kg category. Hebei is a northern province of China and the country’s 6th most populous province. The same year, Yadong stood 5th in the National Muay Thai Championship. Muay Thai is a combat sport that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques.
  • He eventually transitioned to mixed martial arts and began getting trained in that code when he was 13 years old. Yadong’s progress was swift and he made his professional mixed martial arts debut in May 2013, about 7 months before his 16th birthday. Incredibly, that debut bantamweight bout was declared a ‘no contest’ during the 1st round after an accidental groin strike.
  • A year before this, in 2012, he had finished in 4th place at the Shanghai Jiu-Jitsu Open. Jiu-Jitsu is a family of Japanese martial arts and a system of close combat (unarmed or with a minor weapon) that can be used defensively or offensively to subdue one or more weaponless or armed and armored opponents.
  • In November 2017, Yadong made his UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) debut – in the featherweight division. He defeated the first-ever Indian-born fighter in the UFC and fellow debutant Baharat Kandare via submission (guillotine choke). For the bout, he also won his first UFC Bonus Award – ‘Performance of the Night’.
  • As of May 2023, Yadong was tied for the 4th most knockout wins (5) in the history of the UFC‘s bantamweight division.
